There is a large list of social networking sites around. If you go on Alexa and find the top 100 websites you will find a number of social networking sites listed there in top 100. I don’t know what makes them too popular? People just get crazy for exploring the new world. All the website owners therefore target these social networking sites to get the traffic to their blogs and websites. The websites which we will be looking today in demographic data by royal.pingdom are reddit, twitter, facebook, live journal, yelp, hi5, last.fm, good reads, Slashdot, hacker news, orkut, stackflow, tumblr, pinterest, github, stumble upon, deviant art, tagged, my space, flicker, blogger, quora, and linkin.
The demographic data we will be presenting here is based on United States only in the month June 2012.
Average Age Distribution In Social Networking Sites.
The age in social networking sites is distributed such that about more than 50% people are of the age between 25-44. The ratio is less in teenagers, and adults of ages from 18-24 are 16% out of 100%. The image below gives the further information about the average age distribution over the social networking sites.

Individual Age Distribution In Sites.
Pingdom; however is reporting that this age distribution differs quickly if we consider each website individually. The websites in the chart below are arranged with respect to average age.

About 79% of LinkIn users are of age 35. For the same age other websites twitter, facebook and pinterest follow the percentage of 55%, 65%, 63% respectively. This makes it absolute clear that social networking is not only for youngsters.
On the other hand the scenario is opposite Hacker News have not 44% of users under the age block of 18-24. And what about orkut? No other site has shown such extreme, about 76% of orkut users are of the age between 18-24.
Average Age Of Users On Each Site.
The average age of all users on the all social networking sites we mentioned above is 36.7 years, which is of course is not very old. The average age of facebook users is 40.3 and of twitter is 37.3 years. The chart below shows the average age of users on each site separately. However, it is worth noting that average age of LinkIn users is 44.2 years.

Gender Distribution.
The demographics show that women are interested in social networking more than males. About 51.25% of users are female while 48.75% are male, yes bisexuals are not included. It is also seen that in 17 sites out of 24 female users are dominant and sites with more males than females are Slashdot, Hacker news, and stack overflow.
